Subsidence is easy to overlook because it happens gradually over many years. Gary Struzick explains how continued groundwater pumping caused the land to sink across west Houston and why the Authority was created to help address subsidence through the use of surface water.

Subsidence isn’t just one little hole 10 feet in diameter. You look at it, and it goes down. You don’t really notice it because it’s a gradual dropping of the land surface.
In parts of west Houston where we are, it’s already reached seven feet of subsidence.
You don’t realize it because you’ve been sitting there for 40 or 50 years thinking, “My house hasn’t changed.” Well, it has. It’s just dropped like everybody else’s.
We were created to address that subsidence issue and to provide a water supply in lieu of groundwater pumping.
